The Legacy System is the account-wide progression of World of Warcraft: Forever. You complete Legacy Challenges with any of your characters, earn Legacy Points and spend them on Legacy Perks, while Legacy Rewards unlock items. Everything below comes from Blizzard's article of September 23, 2026, and from the official articles on rulesets and PvP.
How the Legacy System works
Blizzard calls it a new account-wide “horizontal progression system”, built from three components: Legacy Challenges, Legacy Perks and Legacy Rewards. Legacy Points are what links them.
- Legacy Challenges: goals spread over six categories, from classes and professions to PvP, dungeons and raids.
- Legacy Points: what you earn by completing them; they are shared by the characters on your account.
- Legacy Perks: what you spend Legacy Points on, organized in three trees.
- Legacy Rewards: items the system unlocks; four are announced for launch.
In the Deep Dive panel recap of September 13, Blizzard also refers to it as “Legacy progression”.
How to unlock it
The system opens when you earn your first Legacy Point. According to Blizzard this usually happens at level 25, but there are two other routes:
| Route | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Leveling | usually level 25 |
| Professions | 150 skill in a primary profession that is not a gathering profession |
| Exploration | exploring the whole map |
Once it is unlocked, the Legacy window opens with the Y key.
The 65 Legacy Challenges
At launch there are 65 challenges in six categories:
| Category | Challenges |
|---|---|
| Classes | 27 |
| Tradeskills | 18 |
| PvP | 12 |
| Dungeons | 3 |
| Raids | 3 |
| Adventure | 2 |
Among the challenges Blizzard mentions are defeating all 13 bosses of Hyjal Summit and all 8 bosses of the Barrow Deeps, the two new raids; Onyxia is also named among the challenges. According to the What's Next panel recap, Hyjal Summit brings 20-player encounters and the Barrow Deeps is a max-level 10-player challenge, and new raids unlock on December 9. More in the guide to zones, dungeons and raids.
PvP feeds the system as well. The October 7 article on PvP progression explains that every PvP season has a path of weekly tasks, and three of those tasks award a Legacy Point.
Legacy Points and Legacy Perks
Legacy Points are account-wide for every character that is not Hardcore: what you earn with one character counts for the others. Spending, however, is per character. At launch each character can use at most 16 points, in three trees:
- Professions
- Adventure
- Resourcefulness
The points are shared, the 16-point budget is not: every character makes its own choices within the same cap.
Hardcore and the other rulesets
Hardcore will not be available at launch: Blizzard says it will arrive sometime after. The rulesets article of September 21 explains that collections and Legacy Points are shared across your account except on Hardcore. Progress made on Hardcore does carry over to the other rulesets, but not the other way round, and a Hardcore character that dies can move to another ruleset, PvP included.
When Hardcore arrives, Blizzard plans 12 new Legacy Challenges dedicated to it. The differences between Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Hardcore are in the rulesets guide.
The launch rewards
Four Legacy Rewards are announced for launch:
- Replica Ironforge Air Rifle
- Spectral Bear Cub
- Spectral Bear Tabard
- Reins of the Spectral Bear
What we don't know yet
- The single perks: Blizzard has named the three trees, but this guide does not list each perk and its cost yet.
- Points per challenge: how many Legacy Points each challenge is worth, and which challenge unlocks each reward.
- After launch: the 16-point cap is stated “at launch”; no later value has been announced.
- Hardcore: there is no date, so the 12 Hardcore challenges have no date either.
- December 9: Blizzard says new raids unlock that day, but not which ones.
Upcoming dates are in the calendar, and terms such as Legacy Point are explained in the glossary. For the launch day and time, see the release date guide.
